The Best Ski Trip to Austria no one knows about
This is the best ski trip to Austria no one knows about and here’s why. We often dream of a ski trip to Europe. Images of snowy peaks call to us. Blank sheets of snow waiting for us to carve some turns into them.
Flying to Europe
From the east coast of the US it’s almost easier to jump on a flight to Munich (MUC) than getting to some of the destinations out west. Once in Munich you can consider renting a car and or getting a private shuttle to the ski resort.
Our favorite place is Hochgurgl in the Otztal Alps. The drive from Munich can take you some of the well known ski town of Zugspitze, Garmische and Innsbruck, home of the 1976 winter Olympics.
Gurgl you say
As you drive down to Gurgl you will pass Solden, another renowned ski mecca. Maybe you can consider fitting in a day there as well.
Once past Solden you’ll be climbing and catching a few switchbacks past 1500m, then 2000m until you reach 2200m. Here is where you will find Hotel Riml. You are now above the treeline and during the winter months snow is almost guaranteed.
Your skis go in the ski room. Each locker fitted with dryers for your gear. From the lockers it’s a few step from the lift. In fact you need to put your skis on and take a quick glide down to the chair or the gondola.
The apres-ski on the terrasse where you can watch the sunset is a must. Dining in the main room overlooks the valley, the rustic setting inviting and the service is simply impeccable.
While they are the highest 4 star hotel in the Alps, we can tell you this: it will feel like a 5 star experience. This is the best ski trip to Austria accessible to all ski levels.
